Picking a time to skimboard is very similar to picking a place to skimboard. At certain times of the day liners will be better at one place and later in the day the wraps might be better. Most skimboarders pick when to go based off of tides and wind. A certain wind direction can make the waves cleaner or bigger. When the waves are clean, that means there isn’t a bunch of little waves, or chop, messing up your path to get to the bigger waves. Choppy waves can be compared to a lot of turbulence on a plane ride. The tides are very influential on how and where the waves crash. At low tide, the waves are more likely to be liners and crash farther from the shore. At high tide, the waves tend to be wraps and crash almost right on the beach.
